ou take your new Windows 8 PC to a coffee shop. You’ve just set up
wireless Internet at home. Or you’re one of the lucky ones who has Wi-Fi
on a plane. So how do you connect to and manage your laptop’s Wi-Fi
connections from Windows 8?
In the past, you’d click on the connection icon in the lower-right
corner (this group of icons is called the Notification Area). Then,
you’d choose a wireless network and connect from there.
Luckily, you can still do that in Windows 8. Just press Windows + D
to go to the Windows 8 desktop, and you should see the familiar
connection icon in the lower right. Click on it, and you’ll see a
brand-new pane slide into view from the right side.
This is the connection pane.
But what if you’d like to manage wireless connections from the Start Screen? Here’s how to do that.
Press the Windows Key to go to the Start Screen
Move the mouse to the bottom-right corner to see a few icons start
to appear. Then move the mouse upward. These set of icons are called the
Charm Bar
Click Settings
Click the Network icon. You’ll see the same pane as above slide into view
Click the Network icon.
At the top is Airplane Mode. Those with a smartphone or tablet
will be familiar with this setting. It disables all Wi-Fi connections
and saves a lot of battery life … useful when your laptop is aboard a
plane that doesn’t have Wi-Fi, or for landing and take-off. Also, you
don’t have to use Airplane Mode when on a plane. There are lots of times
where you’ll want to turn Wi-Fi off … such as when you’re connected to
the Internet via cable.
Next up is your Connections. Here you’ll see an icon with a
cable next to it if you’re connected to a hardline, or a series of bars
if you’re connected to Wi-Fi. The shaded bars show your connection
strength, with five being the highest.
Below that are the Wi-Fi connections available in your area. Find the one appropriate to you and click on it.
If you can select the Connect Automatically check box, your PC
will connect to that source every time it’s in range. Then, click
Connect. You may need to enter a password, depending on the connection.
You can choose to connect automatically.
You can also disconnect from Wi-Fi or connect to a different location from this same screen.
f you’ve played games long enough, you’ve surely thought, “Hey, what if I
made a game?” Problem is, you don’t have a fancy computer science
degree. You don’t know JavaScript from Fortran, and you wouldn’t
recognize an art pipeline if somebody hit you over the head with one.
Making games isn’t easy. It wasn’t easy 35 years ago when Warren Robinett was writing machine code to cram Atari 2600 Adventure into 4 kilobytes of memory,
and it isn’t any easier now that 300-person teams are spending millions
to create incredibly complex 3D worlds with the latest in bleeding-edge
graphics and animation techniques.
But if you can set your sights a bit lower than Halo 5,
there are tons of resources out there to help you turn your playful
dreams into a reality. These days, game-making software is practically a
cottage industry. The first thing to do is find the right tool for the
job. Start with these five.

1. GameMaker: Studio
First
released in 1999, this is the granddaddy of modern game-making
software, and its popularity is easy to understand. A no-frills
interface will make anyone familiar with Photoshop feel right at home,
and it combines tremendous depth with a huge community of users. The
answers to many GameMaker questions are just a quick search away. Plus,
the community forums are full of helpful veterans.
At
its core, GameMaker is built for two-dimensional gaming. The toolset
lends itself most naturally to classic genres such as platformers and
scrolling shoot-em-ups. Go through one of the first tutorials and you’ll
quickly author a simple shooter that’ll be familiar to anyone who’s
played the classic arcade game 1942.
Some
may be turned off by GameMaker’s old-school vibe, but I found it a
powerful, surprisingly simple introduction to game design, partly
because it forces you to confront fundamentals. What exactly is
happening when one object bumps into another? If your character “shoots”
a gun, what does that mean in terms of graphical sprites placed along
X/Y coordinates? How many frames are in your heroine’s animation, under
what conditions does her image flip horizontally, how high does she
jump, and how much control do you have over her while she’s in midair?
Answering these questions may seem tedious, but it can be exhilarating
once you dig into them.
If
you do want to write code — or better, yet copy and paste someone
else’s — GameMaker accommodates that with its proprietary language, GML,
which can be integrated with the mostly drag-and-drop interface.
Construct
feels like GameMaker’s younger, hipper, and pricier cousin. Released in
2011, it does a lot of the same things GameMaker does, but in different
ways.
One
of Construct’s interface innovations is the “Event Sheet,” a separate
tab that aggregates the game logic and instructions running in the
background. While there’s nothing here that can’t be executed in
GameMaker, the different presentation may be easier for some users to
get their minds around.
Which
program you prefer will largely come down to personal taste. I
gravitated toward GameMaker for the simple reason that it was less picky
about which sorts of audio files it was willing to import for sound
effects and music, plus the full version is $30 cheaper. But both
feature plenty of depth, have a manageable learning curve, and will be
especially congenial if your design ambitions skew retro.
The provided software for some webcams can be a bit lackluster.
While options for adjusting the brightness, contrast, or zoom exist, you
may be looking for a way to record the feed. If you're already using

The recording function in VLC can be turned on and off at will, or
switched to a set and forget mode. This allows you to use the feature
for a number of purposes, including studying your own abilities on
camera, setting up a temporary security feed (hard drive space
allowing), or just making a video for the Web. Check out these steps for

Choose your microphone. This can be the one built into your webcam, a

the software settings for your webcam, then check the box next to Device

can choose to view the video as you're making it, which will require
you to wear a headset to avoid audio feedback. Additionally, you'll need
to click the Record button when you want to capture the feed, which will be saved in MP4 format in your VLC directory. Click Play at

button? You can enable it by going to View > Advanced Controls.
Direct save: If you don't want to wear headphones,
and you're confident that your webcam is at the correct angle to
capture what you want, then you may opt for this method of recording.
When you're finished, press the stop button and the entire video will be
saved. Click the arrow next to Play and select Convert to start this method. You can change the video format if you do not prefer MP4, and then you can click Browse to select a location and give the file a name to make it easier to find.
Once you're finished creating your videos, you can share them, or
keep them private if you are examining your speech or video abilities.
Computer programming is one the most exciting fields to work in.

bringing in new applications and software. If you are eager to become a
programmer and tap the potential which your computer puts at your
fingertips, it's time you began thinking about learning programming on

How to Learn Computer Programming Without a College Degree?
Computer science is a tough field to master, but it can give you the
most enjoyable and creative experiences ever. Here are a few guidelines
on how to become a computer programmer.
Learn Programming Languages
Firstly, get hold of a desktop or laptop computer, which enables you to
read and execute your programs. Programing is all about learning to
communicate with your computer hardware to accomplish various computing
tasks. Computer only understands machine language, written in 1s and 0s.
For us humans, to communicate with computers, programing languages were
created, whose code can be converted into machine readable form by
compilers. There are a range of programing languages which vary in their
applications and power. You will have to learn at least a dozen
essential programming languages, which includes C, C++, Java, Perl, Lisp and Python.
To get your computer programing basics right, start learning C or Python
at the start. Use online resources and the hundreds of good books on
programming to get the basics. Install the compilers that the language
requires for writing code and execute it on your computer. Work through
examples and problems provided in books and online tutorials, to write
your own code. One of the best books to start learning C is 'Programming
in C' by Dennis Ritchie and Brian Kernighan. Another good book is
Programing in C by Kochan.
Get a hang of C and then graduate over to object oriented programming
that is made possible by C++. Then get a hang of Java, Perl and
Javascript, which is extensively used in client side programing for web
development. Learn HTML and server side scripting if you plan to get
into web development. As you can see, there is a lot to learn and it
will take at least 5 to 6 years to get well grounded in most languages.
Take help from online tutorials and courses offered by institutes like
MIT through their OpenCourseWare.
Start Writing Code
The best way to learn is to practice what you have learned. Write your
own code, make mistakes, learn how to debug code. Participate in coding
competitions and test your programming skills. Get hold of open source
software, read the code and understand how good programs are written.
Learn how master programmers achieve economy of code and the logical
clarity that makes great programs. Get to know your computer and the
hardware basics. Learn how the computer works at the basic levels with
memory and processors.
Learn to Run Linux or Unix
You cannot call yourself a programmer until you have mastered using
Linux and Unix operating systems. Install a Linux distribution like
Ubuntu on your computer and tinker around with it. It will provide you
with all the programing tools you need, along with compilers.
Apprentice Expert Programmers
Let expert programmers take you under their wing. Find a good mentor who
is ahead on the path of becoming a master computer programmer. Take
advice and learn from them.
Read Code, Write Code and Keep Improving
Keep writing your own piece of computer code and keep thinking on how
you could improve it. Join the open source movement and analyze the
anatomy of good programs. Pick up your domain of expertise and go deep.
Remember that there is always room for improvement!
Let there be no illusions that programming is an easy task. It will take
ten to fifteen years at least for you to attain a level where you can
start calling yourself a complete programmer. Your success in
programming is directly proportional to the dedication and persistence
you put into your learning. As suggested before, master at least a dozen
programming languages including C, C++, Java, Lisp, Python, Perl and
Javascript, read and understand new code, keep attacking newer computing
challenges and grow as a programmer. The aim of this Buzzle article on

If you want to install other apps and use Android as it was meant to be
used, you'll need to root your Kindle Fire HD. Here's how.
The
Kindle Fire HD
is a cracking little tablet, but it's very much Amazon's way or the highway (the highway in this case being the
Google Nexus 7
) -- you're stuck with Amazon's customised interface,
Amazon's choice of apps, and Amazon's favourite services (like Lovefilm
and the Amazon Cloud Player). If you want to install other apps and use
Android as it was meant to be used, you'll need to root your device.
After rooting, you can revamp the Kindle Fire HD interface if you wish.
If you're new to rooting, it gives you advanced control over your tablet. While your Kindle Fire HD
won't seem much different after you've completed the process, you can
then do all kinds of tweaks and customisations -- remove the adverts,
run the stock version of Android, install apps from Google Play, and so on.
It's not all sweetness and light, though. You will void your warranty,
so you need to be extra careful about what apps you install in future.
Many users happily run rooted Android devices, and I worked through the
following steps without any major issues, but as you're turning off the
official Amazon-approved main road, CNET can't take responsibility for
where you end up.
If you're ready to supercharge your Kindle Fire HD and give it the life it's always dreamed of, read on.
Before
you start: this process has been tested on a Kindle Fire HD running the
newest 7.2.3 firmware (check your version by visiting Device/ About in
Settings). For help upgrading to this version, see the official Amazon page.
You'll also need a decent level of battery left on your
tablet (at least 60-70 per cent is recommended). Finally, make sure
everything precious on your Kindle Fire HD is safely backed up, should
the worst happen.
1. Download the rooting tools
You'll need a selection of rooting tools first of all, some available
from official sources and some put together by Android enthusiasts. Make
a new folder on your desktop to hold these files, called 'rooting' or
similar.
Download the ADB Drivers (debugging tools) for the Kindle Fire HD and Bin4ry's Root Tool listed on the first post from this thread on the Phandroid forums.
Run the Kindle Fire ADB drivers.exe executable first, clicking through
any warnings or security alerts you see. If the drivers fail to install
correctly, try switching to the alternative driver download link from
the forum post I just mentioned. Once this is done, extract the contents
of Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v17.zip to the same folder.
Install the drivers necessary for your computer to recognise the Kindle.
Now a fiddly bit. Go to your Windows user account folder (eg
C:\Users\Dave) and create a new folder called '.android.' -- Windows
will remove the final dot, but you must include it to begin with. Save a
plain text file into this folder called 'adb_usb.ini' containing just
the line '0x1949'. This informs the rooting tool what device you're
working with. Once that's done, your software is ready to go.
This is what your customised .ini file should look like.
2. Prepare your Kindle Fire HD
Next, turn your attention to your Kindle Fire HD and say goodbye to it
in its unrooted state. Open the Settings screen (tap 'More' on the
notification bar) then go into Device and ensure 'Allow Installation of
Applications' is set to 'On'. In the Security section tap the 'On'
button next to 'Enable ADB' (you'll receive another security alert,
which you can dismiss). These two settings let the rooting tools do
their stuff.
'Allow Installation of Applications' needs to be switched to On.
'Enable ADB' needs to be switched On too.
3. Root your device
Now for the rooting proper. Connect the Kindle Fire HD to your computer
using a USB cable and give it a few moments to be successfully detected.
Open up a command prompt window (type: cmd in the Start screen on Windows 8, or click Start and type: cmd in Windows 7 or Vista, then press Enter).
Switch to the folder containing your root files (type: cd desktop\rooting, where 'rooting' is the name of the file you created earlier, then press Enter). Then type the following command:
stuff\adb devices
and hit Enter.
You should see that an Android device has been detected (under 'List of
devices attached'). If it isn't, there's likely to be a problem with
your drivers -- try uninstalling and reinstalling them, or visiting
Device Manager in Control Panel and updating the Kindle drivers from
there (right-click on the Kindle entry and choose 'Update Driver
Software'). Ideally you should see two entries for your Kindle in Device
Manager. With the device detected successfully, type: RunMe and press Enter.
This
batch file contains the instructions needed to root your Kindle Fire
HD. Check the device is unlocked, then press '1' (on your computer's
keyboard) and Enter. Keep an eye on the Kindle's screen and choose
'Restore' when you get the option to.
The device will reboot and
may run slowly during the rooting process, but keep your eye on the
command prompt window for further instructions. Unlock your Kindle each
time it reboots, and when you see the confirmation message on your
computer, the tablet has been successfully rooted. Your customisations
can begin!
You'll see a confirmation message once the rooting is complete.
The Kindle Fire HD is more difficult to root than many other Android
devices, and the procedure doesn't always run smoothly -- the plethora
of forum threads across the Web on the topic are testament to this.
If you're experiencing problems I'd recommend this excellent thread on Phandroid,
which I'm indebted to for helping with this guide. After the initial
post you'll find a list of issues and potential troubleshooting fixes.
In
some cases it may be necessary to download the full Android SDK from
Google; in other cases running a factory reset on your Kindle Fire HD
before attempting the above steps may resolve your problem. I wouldn't
want to put you off, however -- I managed the job in an hour with only a
couple of minor hiccups. Keep an eye on CNET UK's How To section for some ideas on how to make use of your newly unrooted Kindle.

The Facebook app and its Messenger counterpart have been met with a
lot of criticism from users. Among the reviews, you'll find complaints
about permission settings and the lack of features in each app when
compared to the mobile Web UI.
As an alternative to these apps, a recent post on Lifehacker recommends
that you check out Tinfoil for Facebook. The developer, Daniel Velazco,
refers to this app as "a wrapper for Facebook's mobile site," but it's
much more useful than it sounds. Behind the scenes, Tinfoil creates a
sandbox for all of Facebook's cookies, storing them independently from
your normal browser cookies. This keeps your information from being
leaked and tracked across other websites. Here's how to get started: Step 1: Install
Tinfoil for Facebook slide-out menu. Step 2: Adjust the settings
Before using the app, you may want to tweak a few
settings. Slide out the menu on the right-hand side of the screen and
tap Preferences. Check the box next to Open links inside the app for
additional sandboxing of your cookies (this should probably be a
default). The rest of the settings are up to you: toggle the ability to
check-in, block images, force a specific version of the site to load, or
add a proxy.
Tinfoil for Android settings Step 3: Extra precautions
Lifehacker's post reminded readers that the Tinfoil sandbox only works
in one direction. If you're logged into other services (like your
Google account), Facebook can use the data in those cookies to track
your habits off its website. Ultimately this means that you'll need to
logout of other services before opening Tinfoil for Facebook.
Note: Some
users may have issues sharing photos through Tinfoil, but according to
the developer, this occurs on Facebook's end as a result of testing
features in waves.
Google has released a beta version of Android L, the as-yet unnamed next release of the mobile operating system. Anyone can install this on their Nexus 5 or Nexus 7, but it’s unwise to do so if it’s your main smartphone or tablet.
As Google states, “The Android preview system image is not a stable
release, and may contain errors and defects that can result in damage to
your computer systems, devices, and data. The preview Android system
image is not subject to the same testing as the factory OS and can cause
your phone and installed services and applications to stop working.”
So, you have been warned, but the good news is that you can uninstall
the Android L preview and revert to factory settings. Just make sure
you have backed up everything that you can’t afford to lose before you
install Android L, since the process will wipe your device.
We’ll explain step by step how to install the preview on a Nexus 5,
using Windows 7 or 8, and also how to go back to the original software
that your device shipped with.
How to install Android L
Step 1. Download the minimal 2MB installer from this XDA thread this XDA thread which includes the Android ADB and fastboot tools.
You need these to install the Android L image, and this is the
quickest and easiest way to install the tools without downloading the
entire Android SDK, which is huge and contains stuff you don’t need to
get Android L.
Follow the instructions (don’t change the installation path when
asked where to install it) and you should end up with a command prompt
window:
Step 2. Download the appropriate file for your device:
You will also need a utility such as 7-zip which
can extract the files from the .tgz archive. In fact, you’ll need to
unzip the files twice, as there’s a .tar file inside the .tgz file.
Extract the files to the same folder as the Minimal ADB and Fastboot,
which is c:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot.
Once extracted you should have a list of files as per the image below.
Step 3. Head to Settings, and scroll down to About
phone at the bottom. Scroll down to Build number and tap it 7 times.
This unhides the developer options, which aren’t displayed in Android
4.2 and later. In the Developer options menu, enable USB debugging.
Step 4. Download the Google USB driver from here here and extract the zip file somewhere. Step 5. With your Nexus connected via USB and
powered on, go to the Control Panel and click Devices and Printers. You
should see your device in the list. On our Windows 8 machine, it was
listed as ‘MTP’ under Multimedia devices. Right-click on it, and choose
properties. Click on the Hardware tab, then select the Nexus 5 in the
list, and click Properties. Now update the driver, pointing Windows to
the folder where you extracted the Google USB driver. Once done, it
should report the device as Android Composite ADB interface. Plus, you
should get a prompt on your device’s screen asking “Allow USB
debugging?”. Tick Always allow from this computer and tap OK.
Step 6. Now, Power off your device, and leave it
connected to your computer’s USB port. Now start it using the
appropriate key combination to put it in “fastboot” mode.
For the Nexus 5, that’s by holding down the volume up, volume down
and power buttons simultaneously. You should see a screen like the one
below
Alternatively, you can leave your device on and type adb reboot-bootloader to restart in fastboot mode.
Step 7. If the LOCK STATE says locked (which it should) then type
‘fastboot oem unlock’ at the command prompt, without the quotes, and
press Enter. You’ll see a screen like the one below. To change from no
to yes, use the volume rocker, and to select the option, press the power
button.
This WILL erase your device, so make sure you’ve backed everything up first.
Step 8. With the bootloader unlocked, you can now install the Android L firmware. Simply type
flash-all
and the process will begin. You will see alternating downloading… writing…. erasing… on your device’s screen.
Step 9. When the process finished, you should lock
the bootloader again for security. Start the device in fastboot mode (as
in Step 6), and then type fastboot oem lock
Locking the bootloader won’t wipe any data, but if you unlock it again, it will erase the device of all user data and settings.
How to uninstall Android L and return to factory settings
Reverting to the version of Android you had before installing Android
L is pretty much the same process as you’ve just completed.
Step 10. First, download the correct version of Android KitKat for your device from Google's images page
You can choose which version of KitKat you want.
Step 11. Then, extract it as in Step 2 above. You’ll
need to delete the Android L files from the c:\Program Files
(x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder before copying the extracted files
there. These are the files to remove (in case you forgot which were
which). Step 12. Repeat step 6 to 8, and you'll have a box fresh Nexus 5 (or 7).

How To: Download apps from Google Play directly to your PC
We have been testing and reviewing a lot of
Android phones and tablets in the recent past, and we definitely need to
keep a few apps for benchmarking and other such information. In order
to do the same, we initially need to set up wireless networking, punch
in the credentials of the Google account, then search for the needed
apps and download them. Downloading apps from the Google Play Storerequires
an account and hence the entire exercise.
This is not only time
consuming, but also painfully slow at times when the Internet connection
is down or weak. In order to get things in the fast lane, we use an app
to back up the apps and save them on the PC.
On the other hand, as we
all know, most apps keep being updated by their developers and tracking
the updates is not possible if we do not have the Google account setup
on the Android device.
This means doing the same thing all over again
and hitting the 'Update App' button every time we have to test a new
device.
Real APK Leecher
Many others who constantly do ROM installations and updates on their
Android devices would also like to keep a backup of the apps. Installing
apps directly from the SD card not only saves downloading time, but
also helps you save money by using the Internet on 3G connections. You
can save apps to the SD card using third-party apps such as File Expert, Titanium Backup, App Monster
and other such utilities, but they only save the currently installed
apps. So then, what about new updates for the apps? Updating the app is
only possible after installing it and then running the Play Store to
check for any updates.
Set up the utility
In order to overcome this obstacle, we found a Windows-based utility
on the XDA forums, developed by the ‘Codeimba.com’ team from Vietnam,
called ‘Real APK Leecher’. The software is a JAVA-based utility, which
connects to the Internet and the Google Play Store online. The utility
needs to be filled with the details of your Google account and the
Device ID of your phone in the options. Once the necessary details are
filled, it can be used to search and download apps from the Play Store.
You can also specify a folder where you have existing apps stored so
that they can be scanned and checked for any updates. The apps and
updates can be downloaded to a folder of your choice. Read ahead for a
walk through on how to get the app and set it up on your PC.
Get your Device ID
Download the Real APK Leecher utility from here.
Download the archived ZIP file and unzip the contacts to a folder on
your desktop. Now open the folder and run the file ‘Real APK
Leecher.exe’. Since you would be running the utility for the first time,
the options (Configuration window) will be shown. In this window, you
will need to give in the details of your valid Google email address, the
password to the email account and the Device ID.
The device ID will be available on your phone itself; you need to
extract it using a simple code on the phone dialler. Start the dialler
on your phone and punch in the below mentioned code:
*#*#8255#*#*
The details of this procedure are also provided in the same window
where these details need to be fed in the utility. If you are using a
tablet, the phone dialler will not be available. You can download an app
called ‘DeviceID’ to get the details of your tablet. These settings
need to be done only once, unless you change the phone, tablet or Google
account. Further, you have the choice of showing the number of records
between 10 to 30 apps on the page while searching for apps. Next, choose
the language and country, leave the SIM Operator Number as empty
(default) and enter the location to save the downloaded apps along with
the location for the folder where your apps are already downloaded and
need updates. After these settings are done, you can click on the Save
button and the utility will start.

Note: If you make any mistake in the settings,
especially with the email address, password and device ID, the utility
will not work as it will give you an error in logging into your account.
Double-check your settings if you get any errors.
Now that the utility has started, you can search for the app using
its vendor name, package name or custom name in the search bar.
Depending on the choice you made earlier, the number of searched apps
will be listed in the window below. To download the app, simply click on
it once to highlight the entire field, then right-click on the line and
select the download option.
Note: The searched apps will have both free and paid
versions showing up and you can only download free versions. If the app
is a paid version, you will not be able to download it, as there are no
options for payment through this utility. You can hit the Google Play
link to go to the Play Store and do the necessary payments there. If you
have already paid for the app earlier, then you can download the app
without this extra step.
Check for app updates on your PC
To check for updates for your already downloaded apps, you can
right-click on any app in the list and click on the ‘Scan Existing
Folder’ option. The utility will then ask you one more time if you want
to scan the folder you previously entered in the options or any other
folder on your PC. Click on OK and the utility will scan every app in
the specified folder and list the entire content of that folder. Each
app will be listed with icons, which will specify if there is an update
available for any of the apps. The icon with the exclamatory mark in a
triangle is the one with updates available. Next, right-click on the app
and click on the download option. Apps that are not available on the
Play Store or are pirated will show up with a question mark, whereas the
ones with the green check mark are apps that have no updates.

You can also use this utility to download apps that are not available
in your country by changing the SIM Operator Number in the options
field. Apps that have carrier restrictions can be faked to get the apps
downloaded. To do this on your phone itself, you need to have a rooted
phone and market enabler app. Using this utility, you can do it without
any hitch. The SIM Operator Number (SON) for various mobile carriers
around the world can be availed from here.
The SON is a combination of the MCC and MNC numbers. SON = MCC + MNC.
For example, Vodafone IN Mumbai has MMC number 404 and MNC number 20,
which makes the SON 40420. Enter this number in the SON field in the
options window.
