Linux Mint est un système d'exploitation, de type GNU/Linux, connu pour sa simplicité d'installation et d'utilisation. Initialement basé sur Ubuntu, donc indirectement sur la distribution Debian GNU/Linux, depuis le 9 septembre 2010, est sortie une nouvelle version de Linux Mint basée directement surDebian GNU/Linux : la LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition).
Linux Mint est donc principalement constitué de logiciels libres mais cette distribution inclut aussi par défaut de nombreux éléments propriétaires ou non libres.
