Windows 8 vs. Windows 7 - Speed And Performance Testing

Released on the 26th of October 2012, Windows 8 was Microsoft’s response to the increase in the huge popularity of operating systems in a short period of time. Almost 3 months on, Windows 8 is attracting individuals spanning over every age group. We have heard much about the new user interface, including that it is disappointing. At this point we feel that initial reactions with regards to its usability and user experience where the user interface is concerned has been extensively covered. Therefore, we decided to take on another perspective that can be a source of bad user experience. I am speaking about speed and performance

The Experiments

To obtain an unbiased view, together with my colleagues we conducted a number of speed and performance tests so as to compare Windows 8 with Windows 7. For this purpose we have carried out tests such as boot up and shutdown times, file copying, browsing, gaming and similar synthetic benchmarks on two identically machines. To ensure fairness, we also ensured that both versions of Windows were identically configured.

1. Startup Time

Windows 8 Starts Up faster than Windows 7. Windows 8 took 18 seconds while windows 7 took 27 seconds. Calculated diff1erence is 8 seconds.

2. Shutdown Time

A similar improvement is seen when measuring shutdown time. Windows 8 took 8 seconds versus the 12 seconds in windows 7. Calculated difference is 4 seconds.

3. Wake-up From Sleep

Windows 8 shows a marked improvement here as well. However we still thought 10 seconds was too long. We then tested Windows 8 using our SSD and the exact same 10 second window was repeated. While windows 7 took 13 seconds.

4. 3D Graphics Performance

3Dmark 11 is used primarily to measure 3D graphics performance – meaning graphics card drivers play a vital role here. Still, the performance was very similar on both operating systems, though the more mature Windows 7 was slightly faster.

5. Multimedia Performance

Multimedia performance is said to be another of the strengths of Windows 8, and as you can see when testing with PCmark 7, it was 9% faster than its predecessor.

6. Microsoft Excel

Comparing Windows 8 armed with the new Office 2013 suite we found that it was 10% faster when running our Excel test against Windows 7 using Office 2010. Even when comparing apples to apples, with both operating systems running Excel 2010, Windows 8 is more efficient using the CPU cycles to its benefit on simulation.

7. Transferring Multiple Large Files Together

Windows 8 features a new Explorer interface for transferring files, which provides more accurate data on transfer speeds and estimated time of completion. It also stacks multiple transfer windows together. The user interface is awesome, but on the performance side of things there is little difference when transferring multiple large files together or individually. Windows 8 and Windows 7 deliver similar performance in both situations.

8. Transferring Multiple Smaller Files Together

When transferring thousands of smaller files we also found that Windows 7 and Windows 8 offer the same performance.

9. Different Browsers with Windows 7 and Windows 8

As you can see, the desktop version of the IE10 browsers on Windows 8 delivered virtually the same performance as IE9 on Windows 7. Chrome works better in Windows 8 incomparison with Firefox runing on indentical Windows 8 computer. Also both Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome perform faster in Windows 8 than Windows 7. Internet Explorer works very slow in all version of windows.

10. Gaming Performance
By testing these two performance intensive games on both systems we noticed that both operating systems provide similar performance with a very slight edge to Windows 7′s advantage:

Battlefield 3

Looking at the gaming performance for Battlefield 3, it can be observed that both operating systems provide similar performance with a very slight leading edge for Windows 7.

Just Cause 2

Just Cause 2 runs just a bit faster on windows 7 than Windows 8 for both resolutions 1680×1050 and 1920×1200. The difference isn not significant however. Similar to the previous 3DMark test, this relies on graphics drivers more than anything else.

Conclusion

Microsoft seemed to hit full stride with Windows 7, developing a fast and efficient operating system. Thankfully it seems Windows 8 continues to build on that pattern as we found it to be on par with and occasionally faster than Windows 7. The improvements that have been made to startup and shutdown times are self-evident, and no doubt a major focus on the new OS’ development. This will particularly benefit laptop and tablet users.

At the end we concluded that Windows 8 is faster than Windows 7 in some aspects such as startup time, shut down time, wake up from sleep, multimedia performance, web browsers performance, transferring large file and Microsoft excel performance but it is slower in 3D graphic performance and high resolution gaming performance. Battery life improved enough to be noticeable. Moreover Windows 8 is significantly more secure than Windows 7 and it is basically designed to take advantage of touch screens while Windows 7 is only for desktops. One last word of advice – if you are running Windows 7 on your current PC, then there is no urgency to upgrade the hardware just to run Windows 8

1. Préparation de l'environnement

1.1. Installation de VirtualBox

Utilisez votre gestionnaire de paquets favoris sous Linux pour installer VirtualBox. Sous Gentoo, un simple emerge -va virtualbox (en tant que root, évidemment) devrait suffire (il se peut que le paquet soit masqué ~x86). Il y a quelques dépendances, y compris un module noyau qui doit être chargé à chaque lancement d'une VM.

Sous Gentoo, il faut se rajouter à la liste des utilisateurs autorisés à lancer VirtualBox: sudo gpasswd -a votre_login vboxusers. Fermez puis rouvrez votre session pour que les changements soient pris en compte.

Note : Pour que VirtualBox fonctionne, assurez-vous que le module vboxdrv soit chargé dans le noyau ! Pour ce faire, faites un sudo modprobe vboxdrv.

À partir de maintenant, vous devriez être capable de lancer VirtualBox avec la commande VirtualBox (attention à la casse !).

1.2. Création de la machine vituelle

Comme aucune VM n'existe encore, normalement, un assistant devrait apparaître. Désolé pour les captures d'écran en anglais...

Donnez un nom à votre VM, et sélectionnez "Windows XP" dans le menu "OS Type". À mon avis, ça ne sert qu'à mettre une icône XP à côté de la machine, dans la liste.

N'hésitez pas à pousser la quantité de RAM allouée à votre VM, si vous comptez faire un peu plus que du simple surf. Évidemment, n'exagérez pas trop, sinon votre Linux risque de swapper à mort jusqu'à ce qu'il fasse un kernel panic. Je pense que 256 Mo est satisfaisant.

Sur l'écran suivant, on vous demandera de choisir une image disque dur virtuelle à utiliser. Comme vous n'en avez pas encore, cliquez sur "New" (à moins qu'un deuxième assistant soit déjà apparu, je ne sais pas).

La différence entre une image dynamique et une image fixe, c'est que l'image dynamique grandit au fur et à mesure que le disque virtuel se remplit. Une image fixe, cependant, gardera constamment la même taille. Si vous êtes un gros radin comme moi, prenez une image dynamique. Vous perdrez un peu en performances d'écriture, cependant. Si vous avez peur de fragmenter votre disque hôte, prenez une image fixe.

Ensuite, mettez la taille que vous voulez. Comptez environ 2 Go pour l'installation de base de Windows XP et des spywares qui vont avec (je déconne), et peut-être 1 à 2 Go pour des logiciels supplémentaires. Je vous rappelle que Windows XP est une coquille vide sans lecteur multimédia, navigateur, suite bureautique ou autres utilitaires décents (désolé pour le troll), donc ne lésinez pas. J'ai mis 10 Go et cela semble plutôt suffisant.

Ensuite, continuez à cliquer sur les boutons "Suivant >" et "Terminer", et vous êtes prêt à installer votre OS sur votre VM nouvellement créée !

1.3. Quelques réglages

Sélectionnez votre VM dans la liste à gauche dans la fenêtre principale de VirtualBox, puis cliquez sur "Settings". On y accède à un hybride entre configuration BIOS et comportement vis-à-vis de l'hôte, mais pour une VM.

• Dans la catégorie Audio, activez le son et choisissez "ALSA Audio Driver".
• Dans la catégorie Network, activez la carte réseau 0 et choisissez NAT dans le menu "Attached to". Cela vous permettra de partager la connection Internet de l'hôte avec votre VM. Cochez la case Cable connected si vous voulez que votre VM soit piratée en 30 secondes (je parle par expérience).

2. Installation du système

2.1. Installation de Windows XP

Dans la fenêtre principale de VirtualBox, double-cliquez sur votre nouvelle VM pour le lancer. Martelez la touche F12 pour avoir le temps d'insérer (virtuellement) le CD de Windows.

Note: La machine virtuelle prend le contrôle exclusif de la souris et du clavier lorsque la fenêtre de votre VM est active. Pour que VirtualBox lâche prise, appuyez sur la touche Ctrl droit (par défaut).

Faites un clic droit sur l'icône "CD-ROM" (entourée en rouge, pour ceux qui n'ont jamais vu un CD-ROM). Là, il y a deux possibilités :

• Si vous avez gravé un CD (ou mieux, disposez d'un CD d'origine) : insérez-le dans le lecteur, prenez soin qu'il ne soit pas monté par HAL ou un autre outil dans le genre (un sudo umount /dev/cdrom fait des merveilles). Sélectionnez le nom de votre lecteur physique dans le menu contextuel.
• Si vous avec une image ISO du CD : cliquez sur CD/DVD-ROM image..., puis sur Add..., puis sélectionnez le fichier dans la boîte de dialogue qui apparaît. Cliquez ensuite sur Select.

Cliquez à l'intérieur de la fenêtre, puis appuyez sur la touche 3 (ou tout autre touche indiquée à l'écran), puis n'importe quelle touche, pour lancer le CD-ROM. Windows Setup se lance.

Je ne rentrerai pas dans le détail parce qu'il y a suffisamment de howtos pour installer Windows XP. Notez juste que le processus est le même que si vous installiez Windows sur votre propre machine. Sélectionnez l'espace non partitionné, faites un formatage rapide en NTFS, puis attendez. Vous remarquerez que l'installation depuis une image ISO est bien plus rapide que depuis un CD-ROM.

Note: Assurez-vous que le câble réseau virtuel est débranché, ou sinon vous aurez des ennuis si vous n'avez pas installé le Service Pack 2. Faites un clic droit sur l'icône "Réseau", et assurez-vous que la case devant Adapter 0 est décochée. À moins que vous vouliez faire un honeypot...

2.2. Installation des extensions VirtualBox

Avec des va-et-vient incessants entre hôte et VM, vous serez peut-être d'accord que l'utilisation de la touche hôte pour passer de la VM à l'hôte devient pénible. Pour y remédier, il existe des "drivers" qui permettent de fusionner le curseur hôte et VM, ou de redimensionner la fenêtre à sa guise, ou même de fusionner les bureaux hôte et client.

Heureusement, ce n'est pas trop difficile. Assurez-vous d'être connecté à Internet. Lancez votre machine, attendez d'avoir votre bureau Windows. Sélectionnez ensuite Install Guest Additions dans le menu Devices. Suivez les instructions à l'écran, rebootez votre VM, et c'est dans la poche.

Conclusion

Ce how-to est très incomplet : je n'ai pas parlé de toutes les fonctions de mis en réseau, ni des snapshots (fonctionnalité intéressante pour ceux qui veulent faire des crash-tests sur leur VM ou installer des virus pour voir ce que ça fait). Je vous recommande de lire le manuel (en anglais) afin de savoir tout ce dont VirtualBox est capable.
